Fuel Poverty

Support for Patients Affected by Fuel Poverty

At North Devon Coastal, we understand that cold and damp conditions can make existing health problems worse, and even lead to new health issues. For patients living in fuel poverty, this is especially challenging during the winter months. Fuel poverty means that you may be struggling to keep your home warm because of high energy costs or poor insulation, leaving you at risk of both financial strain and health complications.

Cold homes can contribute to a range of health issues, such as:

  • Respiratory problems (e.g., asthma, COPD)

  • Cardiovascular conditions (e.g., high blood pressure, heart attacks)

  • Mental health struggles (e.g., anxiety, depression)

  • Joint and muscle pain due to the cold

To help, we’ve teamed up with 361 Energy to offer support to patients who may be most at risk. We’re reaching out to those affected by fuel poverty and offering free home energy assessments to find ways to reduce heating costs and make your home more comfortable.

Support includes:

  • Free Energy-Saving Measures: Such as electric blankets and energy-efficient light bulbs to reduce heating bills.

  • Practical Tips: Simple advice on how to use energy more efficiently without compromising comfort.

  • Help with Fuel Costs: We can assist with fuel vouchers and guide you through funding options to help reduce your energy bills.

On average, patients who have taken part in this programme have saved around £500 a year on their energy costs, helping them stay warm and safe while looking after their health.

This is just one of the ways we’re working to make sure our patients are supported during the colder months, so they can stay well and comfortable all year round.
